The End of the Internet as we know it?

Looks like Congress is holding hearings today in regards to certain bills that would forever change the face of the internet by censoring it. I object to this whole-heartedly. If we get censored like this, the internet will be a barren wasteland of nothing interesting. The reason the internet is so awesome is because there is a sense of freedom here that we cannot really experience in the real world. I mean sure, the internet it just a crap-load of computers put together, but by being able to surf to all these various computers with their different information, it feels like traveling from one galaxy to the next in one big electronic universe. You know what would happen if they managed to get the bill passed? No more Thatguywiththeglasses. No more Angry videogame nerd.  No more awesome, stupid, idiotic youtube videos. This whole thing will end up just like the government's attempt to control alcohol during the prohibition, and look what happened then. People will make "illegal" content on the internet, whether the government likes it or not, and share it discreetly, and there is no way they can stop it. Why? Because when it comes down to it, we, the people of the internet, outnumber the government 10/1, they would have to arrest the entire millions upon billions of the internet community to ever get that bill to stand a chance. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if we did something like in the live-action Tekken movie (coming to G4 and reviewed by Spoony) where rebels create a secret internet away from the government's prying eyes.

We can't let the government get away with this. If your interested, go here www.tumblr.com/protect-the-net and let them know what you really think.

I don't believe this will come to pass. And if it does, it will get thrown out right away.

Yes, there are powerful groups pushing for it: A/V industries, etc. There are also very powerful groups pushing against it: telecoms, popular websites, GOOGLE. They'll not take kindly to this, just as they didn't take kindly to COICA a while back.

yea, there's too many people opposed to it, they can't just undo what is already done, that's what happened in the prohibition era and look what happened then.

This is just bogus..........if it does pass, there will be numerous amounts of complaints and too many websites will go out of business because of this stupid bill. It's not fair and it wouldn't work right from the get-go. I honestly don't see how any intelligent human being would even think of such a bill.......:iconfacepalmplz:

that's why we need an alicorn in the white house XD

they have no idea what they are doing, websites are raking in money, money that this country needs to put back into so that it can keep the economy going. If they do this, there will be even more people unemployed than ever!

What about the fair use act, which protects reviewers? Have this morons not looked at the particular act in the Copyright Law? People can use an product without asking the creator for permission if it's for commentary, education, parody, ect. Also imagen as well if they close YouTube: The many channels that will be close which are legal. People who have their of shows private or of the media(Like many Discovery Channel Programs which have channels), which could be lost just for the one act of a irresponsible person. Hollywood itself uses you tube to post the trailers of THEIR UPCOMING MOVIES as well in Yahoo and others websites which suffer from the same problem even if they have a copyright policy>:(

This law has of all to lose, whether it doesn't pass or gets overruled in court(if it passes). No Judge, liberal, conservative or independent while allow ONE MAN(The Attorney General, Or the Mainstream media, or both) to have that much kind of power in today's civil rights age.

man, they are just not thinking right, I mean, have you even heard of the bill they are passing declaring pizza as a vegetable? We need to fire these guys and get some new blood in those seats, because all those people we have in there right now are old fogies that are too slow on what's going on in the world. They think they know what we need, but they are wrong. That's what they were thinking during prohibition and look what happened, a freakin' bloodbath. That's what's gonna happen if by some miracle it passes, a bloodbath.

There's a secret internet already-it's called TOR.

But yes, PROTECT-IP needs to fucking die. In fire.

Heard of this... Hope it doesn't pass. Then Youtube will die. :(

Geeze, pretty soon we won't be able to talk about anything on the internet without crediting the original source.

yea, it would be a sad day indeed.

Exactly! That's why this whole thing is a lot of hooplah. They are just trying to hide the fact that they can't do anything about the economy right now, like how the Romans try to distract people with colosseum games.XP
